Erica Whyman, deputy Artistic Director of the RSC held Friends spell bound for an hour with her plans for the Courtyard, revealing exciting developments: rehearsal rooms with river views, a studio theatre to honour the memory of Buzz Goodbody and the wardrobe visible and visitable. Although she explained that not all the funding was in place, her imagination and vision for new work, posing the question ‘What would Shakespeare be writing today if he were among us?’ felt inspirational and apt. News of her production ofThe Christmas Truce, with its Warwickshire connections, provoked great interest, particularly recalling the cricket and football teams who volunteered together. One Friend recalled to Erica the Northampton Rugby Club who went, without a single returning soldier. Erica’s enthusiasm for every aspect of her work delighted and inspired us.
