RSC Friends had a rare opportunity to visit the Charterhouse, one of the few buildings in London that Shakespeare would recognise today. Our tour was conducted by Dr Stephen Porter, its archivist and Stratford resident and historian. On a glorious sunny day we saw the beautiful medieval buildings at their best ; sun filtering through the equally wonderful interior showed the great chamber, the chapel,
the old library and the dining hall, and we finally stood
on the walkway above the cloister and saw the whole site and gardens, with the brothers basking in the afternoon sun. Stephen was accompanied on the tour by Brother Bob, aka as Robert Aldous, who trod the boards at Stratford with Jack Hulbert as a winter visitor some years ago.
Earlier we visited St Giles Cripplegate, a church with many famous literary and historical parishioners, Shakespeare, Milton, Frobisher, Defoe, Bunyan, and birth entry in the registers of Shakespeare’s “base born” nephew. Many thanks to all who came for making it such a good day.
