. The White Devil has a complex plot, it deals with the darkest of human passions and impulses, and there are no heroes and plenty of villainy. Nevertheless Maria Aberg has conjured such powerful and convincing performances from this ensemble production. There is so much vibrant energy in the play, costume, dance music and video which are integral to the action and delineation of the play’s dark themes.
The contemporary setting and the use of film, music and costume remind us that these dark themes, the abuse of power, corruption and the denigration of women, are still current, still relevant. This is a clever, absorbing production.
